Over-the-Counter Birth Control Pills are Here!

You read that right.  Birth control pills, which you have always needed a prescription to receive from a healthcare provider, will soon be available at your local drugstore(s) over the counter (that means, in the same aisle as the cold and pain medicine)--no prescription needed.  It’s called the OPill, and here’s everything you need to know about it!

Is the OPill safe?
Yes!  The over the counter birth control pill is a progesterone-only pill (or “mini pill”), so it doesn’t have any estrogen in it like many birth control pills do. This means that it is safe even for people who can’t take other birth control pills. It’s safe for virtually everyone.

Is the OPill effective?
Yes!  The Opill was tested and shown that it was just as effective as other methods of birth control when used correctly. The “perfect-use” effectiveness rate is 98%, which means that for people who take one pill every day, at the same time every day, without taking any breaks, only 2 in 100 will get pregnant in a year of use. The “typical use” effectiveness rate is 91%, which means the chances are that for people who sometimes forget a pill or don’t take it at the same time every day, about 9 in 100 will get pregnant in a year.  Fun Fact: for someone who doesn’t take anything to prevent pregnancy, they have an 80% chance of getting pregnant in a year.  That’s a big difference!

What are the side effects of OPill?
Most side effects of OPill tend to be mild.  You might experience menstrual spotting, or changes in your period.  Less common side effects might include headaches, dizziness, nausea, increased appetite, abdominal pain, cramps or bloating.

Who can get the OPill?
There is no age restriction on who can purchase the OPill.

How much does the OPill cost?
The suggested retail price of the Opill is $19.99 for a one month supply, or $49.99 for a three-month supply.  There will also be a cost-assistance program available, coming soon. If you have health insurance, it might cover the Opill, or it might not–you’ll need to ask your provider to know for sure.

Where can I get the OPill?
Opill is available at most major retailers nationwide, on the shelves.  You don’t have to talk to a pharmacist; just find it on the shelves and head to the checkout!   However, you may want to call in advance to make sure they have it in stock.  It will also soon be available in some places online.
